Not waiting for the other shoe to drop

Because maybe it has.

In the last week, we have managed:

A broken water pipe, so all the water to the house was turned off for hours. Miraculously, it was fixed on a holiday weekend.

Several short unannounced blackouts and brownouts that our electric company only admitted to after they were over.

An overheating, funny sounding gas cooktop. Patty still cooks some meals for herself. For me, being raw, needing to disconnect the cooktop is a non-event.

Two broken sprinkler heads (not a crowd pleaser to see the geysers of water running down the street in the midst of a drought). Warren, my wonderful Kiwi neighbor, and I did in almost 2 hours of sweat and miscalculation what my gardner could have done in 10 minutes, but we fixed it. Wonderful sense of achievement and completion. Cost was less than $3.00, if you don't include the hourly wages of a MD and CEO. And the laundry bill from our mud splattering.

All but the cooktop are resolved. And we even figured a way so that 2 of the burner are safely functional.

These things are nothing. Cancer gives you great perspective.

Going to fly a kite (bought a funky second hand kite on my way home from Torah study and services) .

Feeling much better about living in an unknowable world. Actually feeing just fine with it. The mist is not lifting, but I am OK with it.

I'm like that, too, Brian. If something goes wrong around the house, I'm proud if I can fix same and often I can - if not, summon help! Keep at it.

I've been thinking about the verses from Ecclesiastes. I agree that knowledge brings pain. I disagree that the crooked will not be made straight. G-d gave us the choice when it comes to pursuing knowledge and, while the more we know the more we are aware of problems in the world, knowledge can sometimes help us to make the crooked straight. Just look at what you accomplished this week with your plumbing! LOL!

As a doctor you deal with the pain of knowing what is happening to your patients medically, but your medical knowledge also allows you to help many, if not most, of them.

Your knowledge of the realities of CLL certainly causes you "pain", but has also allowed you to pursue treatments that are giving you the ability to go surfing and ice skating, consider hang gliding (hope you have a good orthopedist lined up - good knowledge to have on hand), and fly kites.

I think our charge from G-d is to use our knowledge to the best of our ability and accept (the hard part) the crooked that can't be made straight.

Hope you had a good breeze. I loved flying kites growing up. We made our own. One of my favorite songs is "Let's Go Fly a Kite" from Mary Poppins. There is such joy in that scene in the movie and the song captures it so well.

Dear Dr. K,

I'm sorry to say your post put a smile on my face. I know its not nice to laugh at others issues, but I did. When it rains it pours.....I'm sure we all think only those things happen to us. I'm happy that you were able to keep a sense of humor about it. Now I know who to call when my sprinklers break :-)

Be well and have a wonderful holiday weekend.

JC
